Absztrakt

The digital transformation of the media landscape has fundamentally disrupted the economic sustainability of professional journalism. This paper examines the structural asymmetry between press publishers and dominant online platforms, focusing on the unequal distribution of advertising revenues and the lack of algorithmic transparency. While the introduction of the press publishers’ right within the EU copyright framework aimed to rebalance this relationship, its practical impact remains constrained by the market power of gatekeeper platforms. The author argues that a purely copyright-centric approach is insufficient to address the systemic challenges of the digital news market. Instead, the study advocates for a holistic regulatory model that integrates intellectual property protections with competition law instruments and the ex-ante obligations of the Digital Markets Act. By harmonising these legal tools, the bargaining position of publishers can be effectively strengthened, ultimately ensuring the preservation of media pluralism and democratic discourse in the platform economy.
