The digitisation of general society, commencing during the late twentieth century and accelerating in recent decades, means that digital technology is prerequisite for an array of government, welfare, employment, housing, education, health, media, financial services. On the basis of the relevant literature this article tried to show how the prison environment reacts to the digital transformation, how it adapts to continuous changes and in what way and form innovative technologies play a role in this environment. Our goal is to show how important it is to provide various digital tools and services for the successful reintegration and rehabilitation of prisoners and to acquire digital skills as a result. In our view, in the absence of these, the detaining state not only isolates the prison population from society, but also contributes to increasing the distance between them.
Based on the available literature, smart prison technology is increasingly being used to solve problems and challenges in the prison setting. Most applications in prison contexts are in the realm of security and surveillance. Such advanced applications can be found in Asian countries, where intelligent surveillance systems are designed to always monitor prisoners. On the other side, digital technologies were used to educate, train and prepare prisoners for reintegration into (digital) society after release.
Even though many technological options are readily available, technology adoption in prison settings is still very early and premature.
