It is well known that there is an ongoing power shift in the World and the Pax Americana so far seems to be falling apart. The American superpower is mostly threatened by the emerging China and its mercantilist economic and trade policies. From a historical and geopolitical point of view the term ‘reemergence’ of China is more accurate. The United States needs to provide an appropriate strategic response or it will become less and less able to shape the international system according to its own image. It is difficult to analyze the situation because while China is rising, and it is jeopardizing the strategic priority of the United States. Participants of the international world economy and trade should be interested in avoiding the Thucydides trap and therefore, manage the peaceful emergence of China without any conflict. However, currently this puts the U.S. in an attempt to remedy it by engaging in economic and trade battles with China. The trade war, as interpreted by the Trump administration is legitimate due to trade deficit which needs to be balanced and restored. U.S. decisions are increasingly linking national security and the fulfillment of its economic interests, which is worth considering for the rest of the world in defining national interests and major economic priorities. It could happen that the countries of the World have to prepare for a longstanding trade war, which can have a negative impact on a growing world economy. The main questions regarding the relations are: Could the Thucydides trap be avoided by the major powers? What is the nature of the rivalry between China and the US?
