Absztrakt

Harvard University is one of the leading higher education institutions of the world. Its faculty consists of 2.400 professors, and more than 10.000 are working in academic positions in its 18 hospitals. The number of students is 21.000 from 80 countries, and the over-application is sixteenfold. Harvard’s annual revenue is $ 4,2 billion, its endowment is $ 32,7 billion. I analyzed the governance and management of Harvard and looked for conclusions relevant to Hungarian universities. I concluded that the strengths of the managerent of harvars are the vast administration with sufficient resources, the management support to nonprofessional leaders from specialized units, the governing boards that provide external control and expertise, and the office of the provost. This central managing-coordinating unit is responsible for those non-traditional tasks, horizontal programs and initiatives that goes beyond teaching and research, it fosters to accomplish the university’s strategic goals reflecting to the new challenges ensuring the renewal and progress of the institution.
