Absztrakt
In the recent times, especially this year quite an active interest focused on the heritage of the University of Szeged, of which the legal predecessor was the University of Kolozsvár in Transylvania. That started by the will of István Báthory, King of Poland, Prince of Transylvania who deciced to establish in Kolozsvár a Jesuit College and to upgrade it to the level of a university, that is why he issued charters in 1580 and in 1581 in this case. What is more, according to the Catholic custom, Báthory forced the Holy See to confirm his foundation. This institution never got it, but despite that, no one can doubt that Báthory s foundation in Kolozsvár worked as a real university, because a privilege issued by the Pope was only a usual, but not a necessary condition for legitimating a Catholic university; there are some examples for it from the Middle Ages. Its more difficult to see clearly the real quality oft he school, because the terminology was not consequent that time: the phrases „universitas" or „academia" or „studium generale" often meant the same. Nevertheless during the first period oft he history oft he institution (until 1784) it worked as an university, moreover, it was considered as an example to establish an another university in Kassa in 1657, too. So there is no reason to deny the quality of the university from Báthory s foundation: the sources strenghten the tradition.
