Rhetorical and Poetic Characteristics in Gönci Aszalós Mihály’s Neo-Latin Poetry Collection

Abstract

Gönci Aszalós Mihály’s collection of poems entitled Calathus strenarum hor-tensium, symbolicarum, et poeticarum…, which was published in 1618, has had a limited reception, including only short overviews. In this paper, I try to examine Gönci Aszalós’s poems more closely in terms of rhetoric and poetics, focusing on the structure of the poems, the speech situations, the rhetorical and poetic devices, and how text composition techniques and plant symbolism work in the poems.
