Absztrakt

The author of the paper aims to present a brief summary of some outstanding English lawyers and reformers focusing the attention on their activities and professional opinions on jury matters in the golden age of the lay jurisdiction in modern Great Britain. Five excellent scholar and barrister gentlemen are mentioned: the well-known Jeremy Bentham, and the less-known Robert Day, Thomas Erskine, Henry Brougham, James Fitzjames Stephen. Their carriers – both as practicing legal experts and lawmaker politicians – are remarkable, and give a parallel look-in to the merits and the problems of the jury behaviour of that time. One more circumstance makes them important for the Central European readers: they were the contemporaries of those Hungarian reformers who became the supporters of the adoption of the modernized jury system which was celebrated in all the liberal states of the continent in the second half of the 19th century.
