Abstract

Black rot is a dangerous disease of the cultivated grapevine (Vitis vinifera) besides powdery and downy mildews. Guignardia bidwellii (Ellis) Viala & Ravaz.) the causal agent of grapevine black rot disease originates from North America It has been introduced to France in 1885, but has not caused severe epidemics in larger areas of Europe till 2000. It can cause 100% loss of yield in organic or integrated viticulture on newly bred downy and powdery mildews resistant varieties that are not protected chemically against fungal disease. In Hungary the first epidemics appeared in 2010 demonstrating that climatic conditions (long rainy periods in May and June) can favour this pathogen., The aim of our breeding program in SZBKI of Pécs is to incorporate black rot resistance genes into our new innovative varieties bearing high levels of downy and powdery mildew resistances. Based on our screening 2 accessions showed outstanding leaf and berry resistance: 'Csillám' and 'Seyval blanc' (Seyve-Villard 5276). Thus, we selected this two varieties as the most appropriate resistance sources for breeding.
