Absztrakt

The development of Mátyás square of Budapest is unique out of the several other Hungarian public space developments that were implemented in the last few years. Its exceptionality comes from the alternative approach that was used by the designers, planners, developers and other place making agents. The local community was taken into consideration like the most important experts of the neighborhood and the square. Accordingly, the developers were thinking, planning and creating in conjunction with the local people all along the development process of the square. This place of the VIII. district was in heavily run-down condition and the fact made it more difficult that communities from different cultural and social background live here close to each other. The main goal of the research is to reveal how the highlighted priority –the social integration –came true. The paper seeks to discuss the question of how a community-building activity and the renewed neighborhood can moderate the local social problems that has been lasting for long years. I made interviews with the local people and experts who participated the development and I did participant observations to reveal the local processes.
