Absztrakt

Lajos Ossoinack, politician and factory owner was an important person of the industry and commerce of Fiume during the period of dualism. His name is related to many local large company’s foundation and management, also the foundation of a lot of shipping companies. From these transportation companies the one which is most related to him is Oriente, which was specialised on far-eastern commerce. Since the company’s foundation in 1893 it was specialised mainly in rice import, but it also transported valuable goods between some of the world’s ports. It was quite a problem for the company when in 1904 during the Russian-Japanese war two of its steam ships were stolen as trophy by the Japanese. In my presentation I will present the story of Oriente Inc., I will assess its ship and goods traffic, and through its financial status I will analyse its efficiency, based on my research in the archives of Rijeka (Fiume) in 2016. My goal is to expand the picture of Hungarian sea shipping in that period and make Lajos Ossianack’s work more known with my research.
