Etiological triad: Oral hygiene, dental caries, and orthodontics in childhood

Abstract
Dental caries is one of the most common diseases worldwide. Its prevention relies heavily on the establishment of proper oral hygiene habits in childhood, parental responsibility and awareness, role modelling, and regular dental check-ups. Orthodontic treatment affects an increasing number of children, as tooth loss resulting from inadequate oral hygiene, harmful oral habits (such as thumb sucking and pacifier use), or developmental anomalies may lead to malocclusions. The management of masticatory system anomalies requires complex, multidisciplinary teamwork. However, orthodontic treatments create specific intraoral conditions that may complicate oral hygiene practices, including those that are part of daily routines.
