Abstract

The author has collected and examined the charters from the period between 1301 and 1342 that were issued by the (vice)comites and the elected judges (iudices nobilium) of the county of Temes. His research into the medieval history of the county of Temes clarified that altogether five charters of the above type have come down to posterity from the first half of the fourteenth century. With the help of these charters - of which only two have previously been published - the author proves that the royal county of Temes had gone through fundamental changes in the late thirteenth century, resulting in the emergence of the noble county, i.e. the self-governing corporation of the lesser nobility. The first written document referring to the existence of the noble county of Temes is from the year 1321.
