Abstract

When we review pedagogical approaches that support the development of self-regulation in our children, we are addressing an important area that is a key element in the successful transition from kindergarten to school. In reviewing the theoretical background of self-regulation, we discuss the concept of self-regulation, present the skills that support its functioning, and examine the role of environmental factors that influence development, as well as the developmental characteristics typical of early childhood and kindergarten age. Following suggestions that support the development of educational practices based on theoretical concepts, we introduce a few examples of games that help foster the development of three closely interconnected areas of self-regulation.
