Using graphic organisers for text processing

Abstract
Reading comprehension is one of the key competences. Without suitable reading and text comprehension ability the students are unable to perform in the school and later in their life. In order to help students to acquire adequate reading comprehension skills, it is necessary to use effective text processing techniques, methods, and strategies. As all learners are, to some extent, visual learners, visual tools, such as graphicorganisers are extremely helpful techniques to illustrate concepts and relationships between concepts in a text. The aim of this paper is to present some practical examples for the use of graphic organizers for text comprehension and text processing, such as ‘five elements of plot’ diagrams, graphic charts, story maps, concept maps and shape poems. The paper also includes digital resources and softwares for creating graphic organizers.
