Neurodiversity in Higher Education A Guide to Supporting University Students on the Autism Spectrum

Abstract

The aim of this guide is to provide comprehensive theoretical and practical support for higher education instructors and university staff in effectively supporting students on the autism spectrum. The document presents the neurological, communicative, and sensory characteristics of autism spectrum condition, with special attention to the challenges that arise in higher education settings. The guide is structured around three main thematic units: (1) the definition and key characteristics of autism spectrum condition, (2) a detailed overview of specific educational needs, and (3) the most common difficulties and strategies for addressing them. The guide addresses communication and social challenges, obstacles stemming from inflexible thinking, sensory overload, and the pedagogical management of aggression and self-injurious behaviour. For each topic, challenging situations are illustrated through concrete examples, followed by evidence-based intervention strategies for prevention and management. The guide emphasizes the importance of inclusive pedagogical practice, the application of individualized support, and the necessity of a flexible teaching approach. The document contains numerous recommendations based on international research findings that promote the acceptance of neurodiversity and ensure equal access in higher education.
