Absztrakt

This paper examines the significant role of culture in shaping international relations, highlighting cultural diplomacy as a strategic tool for fostering connections between nations. It argues that culture, beyond being a mere expression of values and traditions, serves as a vital road for mutual understanding, cooperation, and peace-building on the global stage. Through a detailed analysis of cultural diplomacy initiatives and their impact on international relations, this study demonstrates how cultural exchanges foster dialogue, strengthen bilateral and multilateral relationships, and contribute to the dynamics of soft power. The theoretical underpinning of this study rests on the concept of soft power, introduced by Joseph Nye, which highlights the ability of countries to attract and cooperate rather than put pressure on each other. This framework is complemented by theories of cultural exchange and public diplomacy, proposing that culture is a dynamic force in shaping international perceptions and fostering global understanding. Cultural diplomacy, as a tool for international relations, encompasses the utilization of cultural resources to facilitate international cooperation and understanding. Cultural exchanges, including educational programs, play a vital role in fostering cross-cultural understanding and promoting peace. This paper is grounded in the theoretical background of U.S. Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Scholar Program grantees to Hungary from 2000 to 2023, with a focus on the Hungarian host institutions and the fields of study of the U.S. grantees.
