Abstract
Between the end of the 18th century and 1918 the histories of Fiume and Hungary were intertwined. With its semi-autonomous status as ’corpus separatum’ the city enabled the contemporaries with responsible thinking to find new dimensions within renewing the Hungarian economy and commerce. Ideas of this kind were first born in the Reform Era. The culmination and the implementation of these plans took place during the period of dualism. This was the period when the Hungarian Royal and State Merchant Marine Academy, the subject of my presentation, was flourishing, which, as opposed to the Military Navy Academy, is rarely talked about. The goal of this institution was to meet the personnel demands of the newly forming Hungarian merchant ambitions. The primary aim of my presentation is to map the backgrounds, the motivations, the circumstances and the competences of the teachers working there and highlight the differences between them and the teachers working in the more conventional forms of education. My work is primarily based on archive resource.
