Abstract

Besides the main focuses of the new, 2014–2020 budgetary period of the European Union, research, development and innovation are among outstanding issues. The financial support of this area is gradually increasing. This study examines the absorption of EU-funding in the field of Research and Development (R&D). During analysis of EU strategies, and within it city strategies, data analysis of international, EU, national and regional data is outstandingly important. This study concentrates on the interdependence between R&D funding absorption and development-status and preparedness of each county by multivariate data analysis. The study introduces the short history of R&D sector, the main EU documents which regulate this area and the system of framework programmes, which includes the studied 6th Framework Programme, too. The analysis does not exclusively concentrates on EU member states as R&D funding is received by other countries, too. At the same time, the study gives possible solutions and suggestions for increase of R&D funding absorption at the public sector, with a special regard to Budapest.
