Abstract

Madame Campan (1752–1822) was one of Queen Marie-Antoinette's lady-in-waitings. Known for her famous educational establishment in Écouen – then in Saint-Germain-en-Laye – she left her Memoirs for posterity, in which she recounts the last years of the monarchy. Her writing is an interesting recollection of events, but to be read with caution: the portrait she paints of herself may be far from reality.
