Abstract

Made in China by Jean-Philippe Toussaint is an autobiographical work because it is written in the first person singular, ‘I’, and the name of the narrator and the author are the same. In addition, the author narrates the real events, mixes them with fictional elements in an entertaining way, and uses fragments to show his friendship with Chen Tong and the behind-the-scenes of writing a book and preparing a short film, The Honey Dress. This story does not follow the traditional autobiographical model as the events are not told linearly and they present some fragments of Toussaint’s life. Moreover, the narrator communicates directly with the readers, inviting them to discover his thoughts and the deeper layers of the literary piece.
