From Plate to Microbiome: The Role of Alternative Diets in Shaping Oral and Gastrointestinal Health

Abstract

Alternative diets that are gaining increasing popularity today, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free dietary patterns, may influence overall health in ways that are not immediately apparent. They are of particular importance from both oral and gastrointestinal perspectives, as they play a decisive role in shaping the complex microbiological environment of these systems. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), have been associated with the presence and severity of periodontitis. Due to their underlying immuno-inflammatory mechanisms, the relevance of specific dietary approaches is heightened in patients with IBD, either prior to diagnosis or as part of therapeutic management.


Maintaining oral health at a regular and adequate level not only contributes to the prevention of periodontitis and other oral conditions but is also crucial for systemic health. The association between IBD and periodontal disease highlights the systemic nature of microbiome-related disorders and underscores the importance of a holistic patient-centered approach within multidisciplinary care.
