Harmful Effects of Display Screen Equipment and Methods to Prevent Them

Abstract

In the information society, the use of IT tools daily is unavoidable. Many of these devices also have a screen (that is why they are called Display Screen Equipment, DSE). Their purpose is to support people's everyday life, but at the same time, their long-term use can have many harmful consequences for human health. Observed physical effects include repetitive strain injury (RSI, also called Cumulative Trauma Disorder, CTD), muscle and joint pain, strained or tired eyes, heart, hearing, digestive and fertility problems, or obesity due to lack of physical activity. In addition, mental effects also occur. DSE can change human thinking, break the circadian rhythm, harm memory, and cause addiction, frustration and other adverse emotional effects or unwanted behaviour. There are several ergonomic recommendations to minimize the negative consequences of the devices. These can be read in publications and are available on websites. Existing legislation also aims to reduce the harmful health effects of DSE at workplaces. At the same time, the recommendations and regulations are only worth something if the users adhere to them at home and work, and employers also require compliance with rules even in the long term.
