Abstract

OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) experts studied initial teacher education in seven countries between 2016 and 2018: Australia, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, the United States, the United Kingdom and Wales. The results have been summarised on the TeacherReady! website and published in Flying Start - Improving Initial Teacher Preparation Systems, a document primarily aimed at policy makers and researchers. The aim of this paper is to summarise the key findings of the latter work and to make them available in a form suitable for professional discussion by Hungarian stakeholders. I will present the challenges, possible solutions and proposed strategies outlined in the 6 chapters of the 170- page report, briefly highlighting the main conclusions, interpreting each area in the context of the continuum of the teaching profession. Studying the results and good practices of the study and considering the international expert guidance can also provide meaningful lessons for the domestic teaching profession.
