Croats Along the Mura in the „Tightening of the Border”, Some Aspects From the Beginnings to the End Of State Socialism

Abstract

The life of the Croats along the Mura River, after the consolidation period after the Turkish occupation, was constantly influenced by their border settlement area. This proved to be an advantage in certain historical periods. In the period from the 17th to the 19th centuries, they managed to join the system of mesoregional social and economic relations. This provided them with a slow but continuous opportunity for development, especially after the arrival of the railway. The period between the two world wars did not yet bring the real, unexpected change. The state socialist period became a period of isolation. The border location became a disadvantage. The region became part of the Cold War conflict zone, which changed only after the Kádár consolidation.
