Abstract

This study deals with the history of remedial education for students with mild intellectual disabilities in Hungary, which was created in the first half of the 20th century mainly based on the German model (cf. Gordosné, 1996, 2000; Mesterházi, 2019). The study presents an institutional development path with social and institutional historical connections in mind. It explores the innovative processes of the first phase of Hungarian supplementary education from 1898 to 1920. It examines the institutional background within the framework of which professional thinking about students with mild intellectual disabilities was most prominent in the 19th century.
