Abstract

During the time of adolescence the role of the parents is continuously restructuring and peer relationships come into prominence. However, the change in adolescents’ social network does not mean that the role of the parents is not so important in their life, although the increased need for autonomy correspondently modifies its significance. Parenting style is a determining element of the parent-adolescent relationship, for example, authoritarian, authoritative or permissive, which may influence the adolescents’ health behavior, their well-being and school achievement.

In our study we analyzed the relationship between the so-termed authoritative (responsive and demanding) parenting style and psychological, and health-related variables among adolescent girls (N= 454; ages between 14-20; mean: 16.3 yrs; SD: 1.1yrs). The collection of data took place by a paper-pencil self-administered questionnaire between March and June in 2018. Optimism, proactive coping, self-esteem, body appreciation, satisfaction with life, and the susceptibility to the messages of media were the examined psychological variables. The authoritative parenting style was measured by the Authoritative Parenting Style Index (Jackson et al., 1998).

Correlation analysis showed positive relationship between parents’ responsive parenting style and the adolescents’ optimism, proactive coping, self-esteem, body appreciation and satisfaction with life. A positive correlation was found between the assessment of one’s own health status and the mother’s responsive parenting style. This variable was also proved to be a protective factor against the negative effects of the media that might increase dissatisfaction, for example, with one’s own body image. There was a negative correlation between parents’ responsiveness and pessimism.

These results suggest that parents’ parenting style is a determining factor in adolescents’ health and their attitudes toward their own body. Findings confirm that during the years of adolescence the role of parents is indeed important, primarily the responsive parenting style, in the formation of the adolescents’ health and well-being.
